It happens all around us every day. It is desirous to many, for a great many reasons. Literature abounds in examples of the phenomenon. An ugly duckling grows into a beautiful swan. Nick Bottom turns into a donkey and back again. Gregor Samsa metamorphoses into a giant insect.

And we see it in nature. Summer green transforms into the reds and browns of fall. An egg grows from tadpole to pollywog to adult frog. But the most famous example is the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly.

As humans, we often seek to transform our ideas, our modes of thought, in such a manner as to remake our human nature.
