Time.

It’s a topic that has enthralled scientists, philosophers, and humanity in general for many millennia. What is it? How does it work? Can we travel through it into the past or the future? All that we can say with certainty is that time is relative and indefinite. We all experience it in different ways. As grade schoolers, the day felt as if it might never end. Among the elderly, on the other hand, years seem to pass in moments. But no matter how we choose to define time, one thing remains certain: It is inescapable.

In this pyramid we see clock gears – clocks being the way we have kept track of time for hundreds of years – all of them surmounted by a leering skull. What are we to learn from this? We learn that our personal experience of time eventually comes to an end, no matter how we choose to measure its passing, and we ourselves drift away into its annals, leaving behind our creations. The skull which surmounts the pyramid demonstrates this phenomenon, as it draws the gears of time into itself, and our eventual and final passing.
